SIMPLE PRESENT Explanation

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE 

Clear and simple explanation with examples and exercises.

1. Where to Use the Simple Present
பயன்படுத்தும் இடங்கள்

We use the simple present tense to express:
நாங்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் பின்வருவனவற்றை விபரிப்பதற்கு simple present ஐப் பயன்படுத்துகின்றோம்.

  • Regular habits / daily routines/ வழமையான செயல்கள்
    Example: I go to school every day.
  • General truths / facts/பொதுவான உண்மைகள்
    Example: The sun rises in the east.
  • Permanent situations / நிலையான சந்தர்ப்பங்கள்
    Example: They live in Colombo.
  • Scheduled events (timetables)/ நிரல்படுத்தப்பட்ட நடவடிக்கைகள்
    Example: The train leaves at 6 p.m.
  • Instructions / directions/ கட்டளைகள்
    Example: You turn left at the junction.
  • Feelings & mental states/ உணர்ச்சிகளை வெளிப்படுத்தல்
    Example: I like ice cream.
  • Commentaries / headlines/ தலையங்கம்/ நேரடி வர்ணனை
    Example: Ronaldo scores the winning goal.

2. How to Use (Form)
பயன்படுத்தும் வடிவம்

A. Affirmative Sentence Structure
உறுதியான வாக்கிய அமைப்பு

Structure: Subject + base form of verb (V1)
Except: Add "s/es" for He/She/It.

Subject Type & Verb Form
Subject Type Verb Form / Example
I / You / We / They eat, play, run
He / She / It eats, plays, runs

When to add 's' or 'es'

  • Add -s: play → plays, read → reads
  • Add -es: go → goes, watch → watches, fix → fixes
  • Words ending in -y:
    • consonant + y → change y to i + es: try → tries
    • vowel + y → keep y: stay → stays

3. Negative Form
எதிர்மறை வாக்கிய அமைப்பு

Structure: Subject + do not (don’t) / does not (doesn’t) + base verb

Subject Negative Form
I, You, We, They do not (don’t) + V1
He, She, It does not (doesn’t) + V1

Examples

  • I do not eat fast food.
  • She does not play cricket.
  • They do not watch TV.

4. Interrogative Form (Questions)
வினா வடிவம்

Structure: Do/Does + subject + base verb?

Subject Structure
I, You, We, They Do + subject + V1?
He, She, It Does + subject + V1?

Examples

  • Do you like mangoes?
  • Does he work here?
  • Do they study English?

5. Examples with 1st, 2nd, 3rd Person

A. First Person (I / We)
தன்மை வடிவம்(நான், நாங்கள்)

Affirmative:
I play football.
We study every day.

Negative:
I do not (don’t) play football.
We do not study every day.

Questions:
Do I play football?
Do we study every day?

B. Second Person (You)
முன்னிலை வடிவம்(நீ, நீங்கள்)

Affirmative:
You speak English.

Negative:
You do not (don’t) speak English.

Question:
Do you speak English?

C. Third Person (He / She / It / Name)
படர்க்கை வடிவம் (அவன், அவள், அது, பெயர்)

Affirmative:
He reads books.
She dances well.
It rains in November.
Ganesh drives a car.

Negative:
He does not read books.
She does not dance well.
It does not rain in Summer.

Questions:
Does he read books?
Does she dance well?
Does it rain in Summer?

6. Extra Example Sentences

Routine

  • I wake up at 6 a.m.
  • She wakes up at 6 a.m.

Facts

  • Water boils at 100°C.
  • The earth rotates around the sun.

Scheduled

  • The class begins at 8.00 a.m.
